MEDIA BIAS
http://www.mrc.org

Well the beat goes on. December 21, 2008, the Indianapolis Star did another one touting the biased http://www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org
as a non-partisan organization interested in the well being of we all. It is apparant little research was done. The editor did not inquire into the political party to which most of the mayors belong. The editor did no research into funding of the organization or the political history of its current director.

October 24, 25 and 26, 2008, the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show was held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The show is done each quarter and is one of the largest in the Midwest. It draws visitors from around the country. Exhibitions, in addition to firearms and other weapons, include historic and collectors items from World Wars I and II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam war. Vendors who sell firearms comply with all requirements and are Federally Licensed. Recently, November 11, 2008, a date of particular note to some of us, the Indianapolis Star published an editorial that seemed to portray participants as representing the fringe of society and worse. It was interesting to note that he was able to get Nazi and Confederate flags and the NRA, all together, in his second paragraph.

The author of the anti-gun hit piece was done by Fran Quigley. On the same day, his article was published at Democratic Underground

Once at the site, enter fran quigley in the search area. In addition to his clearly one-sided article, one must read the comments his diatribe elicited even from members on a site so named.

Also visit Indianapolis Star and enter fran quigley in the search prompt. Interesting stuff. As of November 29, 2008, one must purchase the article. It is no longer free.

Subsequently, November 21, 2008, the Indianapolis Star published a letter agreeing with Quigley. The writer refered to "murderous weapons", "sick individuals" and "barbaric exhibitions." John Sherman did not, however, indicate that he had visited the show, himself.

On November 23, 2008, the Indianapolis Star chose to publish a letter that was somewhat critical of Fran Quigley's editorial. Unfortunately, Wayne C. Faatz seemed to accept the premis that there were, in fact, representatives of the fringe at the show. Mr. Faatz did not indicate that he had attended the show.

On November 26, 2008, The Indianapolis Star published another letter. This one, by Timothy W. Wall, again seemed to accept the premis that there were "a few" at the show who offended Fran Quigley because they were right-wing nuts. Again, no indication that Timothy had attended the show, himself; nor any indication that Nazi flag, SS uniforms or NRA had any correlation as Quigley asserted.

On November 30, 2008, The Indianapolis star published a letter by James Gray. It, as all letters published, did not indicate that the writer had been at the gun show.

One might suspect that the Editor of The Indianapolis Star was having second thoughts about publishing such a, clearly, slanted hit piece and was trying to forestall the next rounds of cancellation of subscriptions.

The following letter was submitted to the editor of the Indianapolis Star. The author of this letter was present at the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show of which Mr. Quigley wrote. Dr. Weiss has given his permission to publish his letter here. As of December 2, 2008, the Indianapolis Star has not published Dr. Weiss' letter.
